Our story

Olive-coloured kufiya

Abu Kufiya stands for authentic craftsmanship from Palestine and Syria — and for the real, beating hearts and human lives behind every single piece. From day one, one thing has been completely clear to us: we are not here to make a profit. Every single cent this project generates flows directly into supporting and sustaining the people on the ground in Palestine and Syria.

In early 2024, we founded Abu Kufiya in Germany to share the Palestinian kufiya with the world while supporting the very last traditional kufiya workshop left in Palestine. What began as a personal wish has grown into a project that connects people, stories, and genuine solidarity. For me, the kufiya is so much more than just a piece of fabric. With every sale, I want to pass on a fragment of Palestinian history and timeless craftsmanship.

The journey of these kufiyas shows just how precious they are: every single piece has to be smuggled secretly through more than 50 checkpoints from Hebron to Ramallah. Because of this, no more than 6 to 10 pieces can be carried at a time. If a checkpoint discovers the classic kufiyas, they are confiscated, and the person carrying them faces real danger. To Israeli authorities, kufiyas are treated almost like weapons. That is why they must take a detour through Ramallah, traveling via the Palestinian postal service through Jordan and onward to Germany. Back in Hebron, our work in that historic textile factory now secures a reliable income for about nine families.

From our first eBay package to a true passion project: Abu Kufiya is much more than a shop to me — it is a growing, caring community. Following the fall of Assad, we were finally able to travel back to Syria. Alongside our trusted kufiya weavers, a deep commitment took root: to directly support the mosaic art of Damascus and stand beside its guardians. Damascene mosaic art is a precious heritage that, after 14 years of war, desperately needs our help. Only a handful of people still master this delicate craft today with their own hands. They need us now to share their art with the world once again, because for years Syria was completely cut off from the outside world, without tourists and without access to online marketplaces.

We don't want to ship anonymous goods. Our goal is to bridge distances, tell the stories behind the workshops, and give people a voice. We consciously choose to work directly and without middlemen with local producers. These finished treasures travel to us in Germany and are securely shipped worldwide from here — blending deep respect for tradition with reliable service.

Our shop continues to grow and will always feature new, original, and wonderful products — so it is always worth checking back in.

Thank you for walking this path with us and becoming a part of this story.
